The Council has been established by the Debt Collectors Act 114 of 1998 to regulate the occupation of debt collector. The Act came into operation on 7 February 2003.
In terms of section 3 of the Act the Council must consist of not more than 10 members appointed by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development for a period not exceeding three years.
In terms of section 3 of the Act the Minister has made the following interim appointments until 31 August 2010:
